Representative Lopez-Cantera was born in Madrid, Spain  on December 29, 1973. He moved to Florida in 1974. He earned his Associate of Arts degree from Miami-Dade Community College in 1994 and his Bachelor of Arts

in 1996. Starting in 1991 he worked in a number of roles for Cantera and Associates, his family's business. In 1997, he was a facilitator for the Florida Senate's Criminal Justice Committee.

He worked as a Real Estate Agent for the Pan American Group in 1998 and became a consultant for them in 1999, dealing in commercial and industrial real estate. In 2002, he made an unsuccessful bid for the District 117 seat of the Florida House against Julio Robaina to replace Carlos Lacasa, who was running for the Florida Senate.
