, located about 50 km west of Genoa
and about 20 km northwest of Savona
. As of 31 December 2008, it had a population of 13.740 and an area of 99.5 km².
Placed in Val Bormida, is member of the Comunità Montana Alta Val Bormida.
It is famous as the birthplace of the patriot Giuseppe Cesare Abba
.

passed here in 1213, during his trip to Spain; during its passage, he built the convent near Cairo, in fraction "Ville".
In the 16th century there were some battles between Germany
and France
near Cairo.
