In the qualifier for World Cup 2010, Ruiz was a member of the starting team and he scored six goals, which tied him with Álvaro Saborío as top scorers. Costa Rica was defeated in the play-off against Uruguay and thus didn't qualify for the World Cup in South-Africa.
