C.H. Boehringer Sohn AG & Ko. KG is the parent company of Boehringer Ingelheim, which was founded in 1885 by Albert Boehringer in Ingelheim am Rhein. The Boehringer Ingelheim group is one of the world's 20 leading pharmaceutical companies. Headquartered in Ingelheim, Germany, it operates globally with 145 affiliates and more than 42,000 employees. Since it was founded in 1885, the family-owned company has been committed to researching, developing, manufacturing and marketing novel products of high therapeutic value for human and veterinary medicine. Albert Boehringer purchases a small tartar factory in Ingelheim am Rhein.

Albert Boehringer launches the production of tartaric acid

Lactic acid is manufactured on an industrial scale, proving highly successful on the market over the following years and making C.H. Boehringer Sohn (CHBS) one of the pioneers of biotechnological processes in industrial applications.

1917
The research department is founded on the initiative of the chemist and future Nobel Prize winner for chemistry Prof. Heinrich Wieland (1877 – 1957), a cousin of Albert Boehringer.

1928
Councillor of commerce Albert Boehringer takes over the company Dr. Karl Thomae, based in Winnenden near Stuttgart.

1946
Dr. Karl Thomae GmbH is re-established in Biberach an der Riss with a workforce of 70 people.

1955
The Animal Health division is set up as the company takes over Pfizer’s veterinary programme.

1971
The foreign subsidiary Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is founded in Ridgefield, Connecticut (USA), and expanded to become the company’s North American research centre.

1981
Boehringer Ingelheim KG is founded for operations in Germany.
C. H. Boehringer Sohn becomes the holding company for companies in Germany, while the newly formed Boehringer Ingelheim International GmbH becomes the holding company for companies abroad.

1985
The Institute for Molecular Pathology (IMP) is established in Vienna as a joint venture with Genentech, Inc. (USA). The institute opens in 1988. Since 1993, the IMP has been solely owned by Boehringer Ingelheim.

1986
The biotechnological centre in Biberach starts production. Following investment of around DM 150 million (approximately 77 million euro), it is Europe’s largest plant for the production of biopharmaceuticals from cell cultures to date.

1998
Boehringer Ingelheim KG and Dr. Karl Thomae GmbH merge to form Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma KG.

2003
Boehringer Ingelheim invested more than EUR 255 million in the expansion of its biopharmaceutical

The company's largest site and corporate headquarters is located in Ingelheim am Rhein near Mainz and Frankfurt, Germany. However, Boehringer Ingelheim is a globally-operating company, with 145 subsidiaries around the globe. Their main business regions are Europe, North America and Asia. The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology[5] in Vienna (Austria), founded in 1985, has had Boehringer Ingelheim as its main sponsor since 1993.
In December 2008, the Boehringer Ingelheim group of companies had 41,300 employees worldwide. Of these, about 30% worked in production, 39% in marketing and sales, and 16.5% in research and development. In 2005, the German magazine 'Capital' placed the company second in a 2005 list of Germany's best employers, and in the United Kingdom the company was placed 19th in The Sunday Times'
