Bikatunskaya fortress was founded in 1709 near the confluence of Biya and Katun Rivers by the order of the Russian Emperor Peter the Great, but in about a year it was burnt by a local nomadic tribe. The fortress was re-built at a new place (20 km up the Biya, on the right bank of the river) in 1718 and renamed Biyskaya in 1732. Gradually, Biysk lost its role as a military base, but became an important center of trade, which was elevated in status to that of a town in 1782.
