Rodale's website claims the magazine was acquired in 1964 as American Cycling newsletter but it is possible the magazine was either originally named, or later acquired as, Bike World, a regional Northern California

Whatever the case, the magazine had a subtitle "Incorporating Bike World Magazine" since at least April 1980 and a different subtitle of "Incorporating American cyclist" at another time. Another source claims Robert Rodale purchased Bicycling in 1977. The January/February 1980 issue is volume 21 number 1 and the September/October 1983 issue is volume 24 number 8.
