Encyclopedia
The Benetton B190 was a Formula One
racing car designed by Rory Byrne
and under the direction of Benetton
's new Technical Director John Barnard
who had considerable success as a designer for both McLaren
and Ferrari
. The B190 was raced by Benetton in the 1990 Formula One season
.
The B190, which replaced the race winning B189
, and with exclusive use of the superior Ford HBA4 engine (compared to some of the other teams who were using customer Ford DFR engines) was a competitive car, and Nelson Piquet
and Alessandro Nannini
were able to keep the car running with other front runners such as McLaren, Ferrari and Williams
through most of the season. Unfortunately for the team, after the Spanish Grand Prix
where Nannini finished a fine 3rd he was seriously injured in a helicopter crash near his home which severed his right forearm and Roberto Moreno
took his place for the last 2 races. Piquet won the final 2 races of the season, including a 1-2 finish for Piquet and Moreno at the controversial Japanese Grand Prix
. And at the last race of the year
at Adelaide
, Australia
, Piquet was able to keep his lead and hold off a charging Nigel Mansell
in his Ferrari and took the win and 3rd place in the drivers' championship, behind that year's champion Ayrton Senna
and runner-up Alain Prost
and the team took 3rd place in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren and Ferrari.
The B190 was updated for the first two races of the season and was dubbed the B190B. This car was replaced from the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix by the first "nose-up" car for the team, the B191
