Critical reception
Fatally Yours calls Bad Reputation "a strong and powerful first feature film by director and writer Jim Hemphill" and "something much deeper and more terrifying than your average teen romp". Scott W. Davis of Horror Express says the film "offers a depth to its characters that we often miss in our little [horror] film community" and it "is a thought-provoking and intense journey through one girl's loneliness, betrayal, frustration and rage". Elaine Lamkin of Blood Disgusting complains the film "is a smarter teen slasher movie but not on par with the truly dark rape/revenge films it wanted to emulate" and it "didn’t go FAR enough". Dread Central calls killer Michelle "more calculating than I Spit on Your GraveI Spit On Your Grave
