The station has Easy Access facilities accessed from the overhead pedestrian bridge, incorporating the booking office. Before completion of those facilities, the platforms were accessed from two pedestrian subways which incorporated separate booking offices. The western subway remains as a pedestrian thoroughfare. The station can be accessed via Brown Street (at the Hercules Street intersection) or via Station Street.

There is semi-secure cycle parking provided with racks available on both the northern and southern sides of the station. There is access to a number of cycle friendly routes to both the harbour and the city and to the south and west.

History

The station was opened on 26 September 1855, as part of the original Sydney to Parramatta railway line.

The Main Suburban Railway Line through Ashfield was quadruplicated in 1892, and sextuplicated in 1927 in association with electrification works.

Platforms and services

The station is served by four to eight trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours.
