Anthony Toto was an Italian
painter and architect, was an Italian
by birth, but came to England
about 1531, and was naturalized in 1543. Henry VIII
appointed him Sergeant-Painter. None of his works are known, but they seem to have been valued by the Crown, since Toto died a rich man, owning among other properties the manor of Ravensbury.
His father was a painter by the name of Nunziata d'Antonio
, who died in Florence
in 1525. None of his works survive, and little is known of his life.
Toto was married and had at least one daughter, Winifred, who married Sir Charles Calthorpe
, judge of the Court of Common Pleas (Ireland)
