Oil in 1980 as a mechanical engineer and was employed on several North sea oil projects. From 1994 Inglis worked his way through executive positions until he moved to Alaska

Inglis has also been a Non Executive Director of BAE Systems PLC and BAE Systems, Inc. since June 13, 2007. He announced his retirement from the Board of BAE systems in the summer of 2010.
He was a Nominee for Director of Open Joint-Stock Company TNK-BP Holding which in January 2009 he was accepted and then sat on the board.With his departure from BP at the end of 2010, he also departed the Board of TNK-BP. His position on the TNK-BP Board was taken by Tony Hayward, who was formerly the Group Chief Executive Officer of BP.
Inglis is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering
and of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
