. He is credited for the development of the hand-held ophthalmoscope, thus significantly advancing the design and use of the original ophthalmoscope invented by Hermann von Helmholtz

. Besides his fame as a great doctor and scientist, Anagnostakis was an accomplished author and poet. He also served as Dean of the Medical School of the University of Athens (1871-72 and 1876-770) and as President (Rector) of the University (1877-79).

Anagnostakis died in Athens.
