Ana was born with aids and got it from her mother. Her mother had it and give it to her father. The way her mother got it was from her stepfather because he raped her. Ana's mother had 3 children. Ana had HIV, Isbrel didn't have it, and Lucielle had it and didn't even make it home for the hospital. Eventually her mother died and forced her to go live with her grandmother. Her grandmother take her and her little sister in. She had a boyfriend who raped them. Her grandmother hit her. Then eventually she moved in with her Aunt Sonic and also hit her too. So then she was spent to a detetion center where she was all alone. She felt bad for her sister not that she was not with her. Ana meets a boy name Berto while she is in the detention center. They found out they were both infected with HIV and become friends: but he soon lives her and goes to home for teens with HIV. Then a couple of weeks later Ana goes too. Berto and Ana spents a lot of time together and Ana get pregnant.

Bush has generally declined to discuss her father's politics, though she did say "I'm not my dad," and "I can tell you that UNICEF is doing incredible work." One critic has noted that such statements could be considered "visiting the sins of the father on the daughter."

The book tells the story of Ana whose first memory is of learning that her baby sister has died. Ana's parents die of AIDS as well, and Ana is raised by an abusive grandmother whose boyfriend molested her. Ana learns at age 10 that she has HIV, but is told that it must be kept secret. By 17, Ana has a child of her own (HIV-negative) and is struggling to survive.The book consists of 102 chapters, some as short as a few sentences, and includes 49 pictures from Mia Baxter.
