Borges began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Salinas High School from 1975 to 1978, followed by a stint as an assistant at Pleasant Valley HS from 1979 to 1980. He earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in 1981 from California State University, Chico

Borges is married to the former Nikki Federico. Nikki Borges served as Associate Athletic Director, Marketing & Communications for Auburn until Al was hired at San Diego State. The couple have a son, Cole, and a daughter, Mady Joe. Borges is one of seven children and his brother Keith was an assistant coach on Borges' offensive staff at California.
