; however on November 26, 1991, the Parliament of the Azerbaijan SSR
abolished the autonomous status of the NKAO
. Since then the territory of the autonomous oblast has been administratively split between the neighboring rayons, but most of it remains under the control of the ethnic Armenian forces from Nagorno-Karabakh
and Armenia
as result of the Nagorno-Karabakh War
.
