Previously the 328th served as part of the west coast air defense force from 1942-1944. While performing this duty it also trained replacement pilots. The group was deactivated before the end of World War II

The group was re-assigned to Air Defense Command and activated as 4676th Air Defense Group on 2 March 1954. Redesignated 328th Fighter Group (Air Defense), on 20 June 1955 as part of ADC heritage program to reactivate notable wartime units.
