Courses

Approximately 2 nautical miles of the coast of Medemblik two course areas (orange and yellow) were used for the 2008 edition of the Vintage Yachting Games.


Per course area two course configurations were possible:
Area Orange Area Yellow
Europe ( and ) O-Jolle Flying Dutchman and Soling Soling and Dragon


For the Soling the triangular course was used above 14 knots of wind.

The event was covered by the media in several ways:

No shows

There was also disappointment for the sailors as well as the organizers and sponsors when 19 teams cancelled, for a variety of reasons, less than 48 hour before the opening, or simply did not came. The organization decided that those teams would show in the results.

Opening ceremony

The opening ceremony consisted of the following elements:

     of Medemblik acted as fleet admiral. In that role he judged the execution of the manoeuvers of the fleets of Vintage Yachting classes. The 8 Metre Varg was use as the admirals flagship

    The sailors walked their flags from the Regatta centre to the medieval castle Radboud.
  • Official opening: After the opening speeches and a short video clip of each of the Vintage Yachting Classes in their Olympic day's, the mayor declared the Vintage Yachting Games 2008 opened
  • Social event: Finally the sailors and organizers enjoyed the dinner in the castle

Racing format

Races in all events were sailed in a fleet racing format of seven scheduled races. On Saturday 27 September the wind conditions did not allowed a valid race. The contestants raced around the course in a group, and each boat earned a score equal conform the bonus point system. The five best scores for each boat were summed up for the overall score.

• Only moments after his arrival at Medemblik, the O-Jolle of Felix Hurter was stolen from the parkinglot
of the regatta center.
Felix was able to race due to the help of the Dutch O-Jolle class organization
and Hendrik van Isselmuiden who lent out his O-Jolle.

VIP Race

During the closing ceremony in Medembliks historic Oosterhaven a final harbor race was sailed between the six winners of the 2008 Vintage Yachting Games. This element was introduced in the games as an alternative for the medal race in order to link the sailing event to the city of Medemblik and to bring a funpart of the racing close to the spectators of the event.

For this race the winners used six yachts of the 12' Dinghy class. This Class was used during the Olympic games of 1920

Handing over the vintage flag to Italy

At the end of the closing ceremony the Flag of the Vintage Yachting Games was handed over by mayor Theo van Eijk to the Project manager of the 2012 Edition of the Vintage Yachting Games: Pietro Adamoli. This next edition will be organized at Lake Como

After this the chairman of the Vintage Yachting Games Organization thanked the mayor, sailors, organizers and sponsors and declared the first Vintage Yachting Games closed.

Celebration

The sailors and organizers joined in for a championship dinner and music at the old harbor in front of the 'Cafe Brakeboer'.
