From Old English hænep, from Proto-Germanic *hanapiz, from Sarmato-Scythian (cf. Farsi kanab, Ossetian gän), a compound of Finno-Ugrian *kéne, 'hemp', and *piš, 'to burn; nettle' (cf. Hungarian kender, 'hemp', and peszeg, 'to burn'). See cannabis, for possible further history.
