Imam's formative years were spent in England. His family home was in Richmond, Surrey and he attended Tower House School in Sheen before he attended boarding school at Holmewood House in Tunbridge Wells, Kent from 1977 till 1981. In 1981 his family moved back to Pakistan and he attended CAS from 1982 till 1987 from whence he attended Portland State University where he majored in English with a minor in Political Science and where he was a star reporter for the college newspaper 'The Vanguard.'

After receiving his B.A. degree he began a Masters program in Media Studies, Strategic Planning and Magazine Development from New York University
