Zakiya Cox is an African American
female singer from Brooklyn, New York. In 1992 she was the winner of Hal Jackson's
Talented Teens, an international talent contest that gave young minority women a chance to showcase their abilities to a worldwide audience.
Zakiya Cox went on to win the judges' approval at the Apollo Theatre
in New York City
during her Amateur Night
performance. She was later signed to Ric Wake's production company as part of the female group Faces, which was produced by Shedrick Guy and included a cover of Michael Jackson
's "I Wanna Be Where You Are
." In 1997, she scored a minor second R&B hit single with "My Love Won't Fade Away" on DV8/A&M Records
. Her self-titled debut album Zakiya, released in 1996, also included her first R&B hit single "Love Like Mine". Another single, "When The Last Teardrop Falls" - which would later be covered and Re-Sung by the R&B trio Blaque
- was released in the late 90's.
Cox's follow-up album was shelved during the corporate restructuring of A&M Records
in the late 1990s. One 12-inch vinyl of her follow-up Single "I Like" was released in limited quantities.
Zakiya Cox had a twin sister, Naeemah Jamilah, who died in utero before Zakiya was born. Since the end of her recording career, Zakiya has gotten married and had children. She currently is resides in Pennsylvania
