. He attended New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle NY and attended Columbia University in 2004. He graduated from Columbia in 2007 soon after releasing his first album. While at Columbia, he studied under jazz musicians Steve Wilson

Following his graduation from Columbia, he has maintained a musical career while taking several long breaks to fight an autoimmune illness, a battle that he has documented on his web site. Despite the persistent struggle and occasional breaks, he has continued to perform, including at the La Rochelle Jazz Festival in May, 2010 the Jazz Showcase in December, 2010

As of August. 2011, the Zack Lipton Band is the house band at the Moldy Fig jazz club in New York City's Lower East Side, performing every Friday and Saturday at midnight.
