Founding

The Young Greens of Canada were formed at the 2006 national convention in Ottawa after two resolutions were passed (a constitutional resolution moving that a Youth Chair seat be created on Federal Council, and the second, a directive resolution moving that a standing committee on youth involvement in the party). Their first meeting occurring in a packed corner of an Elephant and Castle restaurant, during which it was decided that a Youth Caucus Development Committee (YCDC) would best meet the need of developing an appropriate Constitution, job descriptions for Council positions, and means of electing the members of a Young Greens Council.
The first Young Greens Council elections were held for the year of 2007.

The Young Greens Council

The Young Greens of Canada are represented by a council of young greens who are elected each year by Green Party of Canada members who are under 30. The Young Greens Council (YGC) is governed by the Constitution of the Young Greens of Canada, which requires that the Council produce an annual Progress Report. http://youth.greenparty.ca/files/2008Report.pdf

The Young Greens Council announced a binding constitutional referendum to amend their constitution for the first time on November 26, 2008. Young Greens will vote on this constitutional reform online from December 27-29. The referendum must be approved by 66% of voters for amendments to come into effect.

The Understory

The Understory is that part of the forest growing beneath or in the shade of the canopy. The Understory is also the bi-lingual e-newsletter of the Young Greens of Canada published approximately once per month. Youth that are growing in the Party and preparing to burst forth and lead the GPC in making Canada a sustainable society. The Understory publishes all that stuff going on in the shade—your opinions on Green politics, your artwork, your photos, and news from campus Greens across the country.

The Understory aims to provide an outlet for youth to become more involved in politics, a forum for youth to express ideas and facilitate green activism, and a means of networking with youth involved with the Greens at high schools, colleges, and universities.http://youth.greenparty.ca/?q=node/14
