The union was nominated for an award by the Centre for Excellence in Leadership in 2006-07 and was short-listed as a runner up in the category of most improved provider. It is a member of the National Union of Students and shareholder union of NUS Services Ltd.
The current President of York College Students Union is Sam Garside, He was elected in March 2010 and took office as President on 19th April 2010 following a year as Communications officer of the students union. As this is his second year as an elected officer he will not be able to stand for re-election under the Students' Unions rules and will therefore leave office on 22nd April 2011.

History
The College was formed in 1999 by a merger of York Sixth Form College and York College of Further and Higher Education (formerly York College of Art and Technology). It used to exist on two sites but has recently consolidated them into one: a major redevelopment of the former Sixth Form College site (previously home to Ashfield Secondary Modern SchoolAshfield Secondary Modern School

Students' Union
York College Students' Union was formed in 1999 following the merger of York VI Form College and York College of Further and Higher Education. Prior to the merger there were separate Students' unions for each of the colleges that were both affiliated to NUS. Throughout much of the 1999/2000 academic year the two students' unions effectively operated separately with one president leading the overall structure. This continued until the introduction of a new constitution governing the activity of the new body which came into force in march 2000.The current constitution was ratified by the corporation of York College in March 2008 and is due to be reviewed by March 2013.
