Programming on XHUNAM generally consists of educational telecourse programs for UNAM students, plus public affairs, documentary and cultural programming. Some XHUNAM programming can also be seen on the nationwide Edusat service.

XHUNAM licensed to broadcast began on analog channel 60 from December 5, 2000 to December 4, 2005. Later XHUNAM transmission license endorsement on digital channel 20 from November 30, 2005 to November 29, 2010.

XHUNAM is generally on the air daily from 8AM to as early as 12 Midnight (longer on some nights, especially if there's a movie or concert scheduled).

At a power of 200 watts, XHUNAM generally covers only the greater UNAM area in Mexico City, though it can also be seen in cable providers through Mexico and through SKY México
