Fischer refused to play the standard "Best of 24 games" match, instead asking for the old-style "First to win x games" format. As a compromise, FIDE offered a "Best of x games and must win y of them" format, but Fischer refused. FIDE agreed to a "First to win 10 games" match, but then Fischer requested that he retain the title if the score reached 9–9. FIDE did not concede this advantage. Fischer did not respond, so Karpov was named World Champion by default on April 3, 1975.

 not counting. Later rounds were first to win four games. The final had a limit of 24 games, which Karpov won 3-2 with 19 draws, earning the right to challenge Fischer.
