Between 2000 and 2002, Woolston WMC and Christchurch Technical briefly merged to provide a strong team to take part in the New Zealand National Soccer League

. The amalgamation only lasted for two years before reverting to its two founder clubs. The composite team's place in the national league was taken by Canterbury United, a team formed as a "superclub" fed by all of Christchurch's teams. This team should not be confused with the earlier Christchurch City AFC, one of the several clubs which merged in 1970 to become Christchurch United
