at the Universities of Göttingen and Bonn

. During his career he traveled extensively throughout Italy, Greece, Russia, France and North Africa. From 1887 he lived in Rome as a private scholar and art dealer

Helbig is remembered for his extensive scientific studies involving the wall paintings of Pompeii
. In 1887, he presented the now controversial Praeneste fibula
.
In 1892, he published the first edition of Führer durch die öffentlichen Sammlungen klassischer Altertümer in Rom, which was a very popular guide to the classical antiquities in Rome.
