History

The name Wissen was first mentioned in the year 1013 in a certificate (State archives Hannover). The settlement-origin was found 1048 in the second settlement period in the grubbing district at the edge of the cologne archdiocese and and called "Wisnerofanc".

The house of Arenberg, burgraves of the electorate of Cologne became the maorial in 1176. After they became extinct 1280, the archbishopric of cologne moved the parish of wissen as a completed loan to the left side of the river Sieg. The part of the parish from the right side of the sieg remained to the men of Wildenburg, whose line Werther of the House of Hatzfeld

 later took the part of Wissen which was on the left side as a fief, too.

1803-1815 parts of the parish to Nassau, after that the parish was sworn under Prussian reign and wissen became a seat of a “Bürgermeisterei”. In the 19th century the traffic connection was hardly improved and bigger industries moved to Wissen. On the 19th of April 1969 Wissen became the city rights. The incorporation of the three until then autonomous communities Elbergrund, Köttingerhöhe and Schönstein followed on the 7th of Juni 1969.
