Congress and served as chairman of the United States House Committee on Patents.
He served as United States marshal for the eastern district of Pennsylvania from 1861 to 1865, and was appointed Director of the United States Mint
in September 1866 but, as his appointment was not confirmed by the United States Senate
, served for six months only. He died in Kirkwood, Delaware
, in 1871. Interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
