History

The area was originally known as Bjørns Plads after the timber merchant Andreas Bjørn who acquired the area from King Christian VI

 in 1735 when it was merely a marshy area north of Christianshavn. He reclaimed it and founded a shipyard in its southernmost part.

In 1762, it was acquired by Carl Wilder who had made a fortune as a broker and merchant. He added a nail factory to the site before his death in 1764. His son, Lars Wilder, continued running the shipvard until he died.
