History

The town was laid out in May 1873 by William P. and Elizabeth A. West, although it started out as a station on the Danville and Southwestern Railroad, and there had been settlements in this area prior to the platting. The first known settler was Moses Scott who purchased land and built a structure in 1827. The post office was established on January 12, 1874. Telephone lines were first installed in 1900, and electricity arrived in 1901.
Mining was an important industry here; there were several coal mines in the area, including the Kelly mines numbers 1 through 4, and mines operated by the Bunsen, Peabody, and Dering coal companies.

On September 21, 1928, Westville High School held the first high school night football game in the United States.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,175 people, 1,420 households, and 903 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,990.6 people per square mile (766.2/km²). There were 1,537 housing units at an average density of 963.6 per square mile (370.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.86% White, 0.41% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races

, and 1.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.76% of the population.

There were 1,420 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the village the population was spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $34,654, and the median income for a family was $47,083. Males had a median income of $31,694 versus $21,433 for females. The per capita income

Westville is served by the Westville Community Unit School District #2 which includes Judith Giacoma Elementary, Westville Junior High School, and Westville High School. The community also is home to the private, Catholic Preschool-8th Grade institution, Saint Mary's Parish Grade School.
