Background

In 1969 Pleasant View Junior/Senior High School became a Middle School now called Pleasant View Middle School as Westland High School was opened. The school colors are forest green and white to reflect the middle schools that feed into it (white from Norton MS and forest green from Pleasant View MS).

Football

The Westland Football program is currently coached by Steve White and play in the Ohio Capital Conference's Central Division. The Cougars play their home games at Westland Field, which seats around 5,000 people.

History

Since its first football season in 1970, Westland has an all-time record of 131-257-2. Westland won OCC titles in 1970, 1992 and 1993. In its first season, Westland nearly went undefeated, but lost in the season finale and finished the year 9-1. After that, the Westland football program had its problems, losing 24 consecutive games between 1973 and 1975. The program's all-time high came in the early 90's when they produced four consecutive winning seasons under the direction of ohfca coaches hall of fame member, head coach Tom Greer,including back to back OCC championships.With the offence led by standout running back Chris Coleman,and central Ohio's top passing combination of wide receivers Doug Carper,Darrin Hambric and quaterback Chad Riggs,one of central Ohio's top passers.Carper was a second team all state selection and one of two juniors named to central Ohio's "super 25" team.While Coleman went on to be a standout safety for Wittenberg University.In addition, Westland made the state playoffs in 2006 with the help of Central District Offensive Player of the Year Kasey Wendell, who ran for 1,943 yards and 23 TD's and passed for 1,571 yards and 17 TD's. A total of six Cougar players have been named All-Ohioans. Currently, former Cougars are playing college football at four schools – Miami (Ohio), Cornell, Finley and Wilmington. Tony Jackson, a former Westland linebacker is currently a back-up at Ohio State, the second Cougar to ever play for the Buckeyes, along with Jeff Ferrelli from the 1972 class, who played 4 years at Ohio State 1973-1976.Jeff walked on as a freshman,and after earning a scholarship for his final three seasons, lettering in 1975&1976.Led by legandary Head Coach Woody Hayes Jeff was a part of winning 4 big ten titles with several major bowl appearances.Including 3 Rose bowls and a Orange bowl victory his sr. Season.Westland lost its football program during the 2009 season with the August failure of the Southwestern City School District levy.Football returned to Westland in 2010.
Central Crossing

Westland has a current rivalry with intra-district Central Crossing High School, and the two schools played each other for the first time in 2008.
Grove City

The school had a traditional rivalry with its sister school, Grove City High School. The two teams even played football games at Cooper Stadium, the city's former minor league baseball park, but Grove City and Westland are no longer allowed to play one another because of fights that emerged during games. The two schools played each other annually from 1970-1973 and from 1981-1998. They have not played since.In the 1993&1994 season there was also a cross town rivalry with Hilliard High school,now Hilliard
Davidson.
