Founded in 1885, Westbourne School is unique in Sheffield. It is the only co-educational independent school for 4 to 16 year olds and enjoys a fine tradition of excellence in education. The school is based in the historic Broomhill area, less than 15 minutes drive from the Peak District National Park. The school revolves around two campuses — a Junior and a Senior school situated only yards apart. Westbourne offers a student-focused environment of educational excellence that promotes sound moral beliefs and values with mutual respect, ensuring that every pupil reaches their full, individual potential.
Barcelona 2008
Westbourne School took 43 pupils and 5 staff to Barcelona during the October half term 2008 for a sports tour. Children trained in the Olympic village and visited venues such as Nou Camp, Olympic museum, La Sagrada Familia, Port Aventura and shopping in Barcelona. A 3 star hotel offered great accommodation and food and the pupils took advantage of the hotels spa, sauna and swimming pool.
Extra curricular week
Learning took on a different form at Westbourne School this week as the usual timetable was suspended for a couple of days whilst an extraordinary range of people were invited into school to share a host of activities with the pupils.
School uniform was replaced in senior school by white overalls for the forensic science sessions where pupils investigated a crime scene, and a criminal offence using casework exhibits involving simulated blood splatter, fingerprints and footwear impressions. They presented their findings in a mock court of law where they role played the characters.
Elsewhere in the school the pupils donned their street clothes and choreographed their own ‘street dance’ routine with London based dance instructor Lyndsay Wells, “the whole school was buzzing with excitement and the children really entered into the spirit of the dance” said Lyndsay. The activities were part of an end of term wind down to a very productive half term which saw the Westbourne sports team heading off to a half term sports tournament in Barcelona.
Other activities included, an architecture workshop, a boat building session, an art history workshop and a trip to a Space Centre. The junior school enjoyed a puzzle workshop, a range of art activities based on the human form and a sponsored singing day, which involved none stop singing from 8:30 am until the finale by local jazz singer Karen Lake of the ‘Lounge Lizards’ at 4 pm.
