SR 548 is also known as one of three routes that violate Washington's highway numbering standard, which has even-numbered routes going west–east and odd-numbered routes going south–north. SR 548 (west–east), SR 523 (west–east), and SR 531
(west–east) are the three routes that violate the standard.
SR-548 was added to the state highway system effective April 1, 1992. This highway starts at I-5 Exit 266 and heads west, then north to Blaine. The route serves traffic headed for the BP
and ConocoPhillips
refineries, the Intalco aluminum plant, and Birch Bay State Park
. In Blaine SR 548 joins Portal Way (former US 99) and passes through the downtown area, ending at I-5 Exit 276, the last exit before the US-Canadian border.
