WICR began broadcasting in 1962 with ten watts of power. Today, the station offers a wide variety of public radio programming that reaches across central Indiana. In 2004, the station began broadcasting in HD Radio

. It also streams its programming from the station website. WICR is a student run radio station overseen by the student management members and full time faculty members. Students enrolled in the Applied Radio course at the university are responsible for weekly shifts, producing shows, sports broadcasting, and updating the web site.

The station is licensed to the University of Indianapolis Board of Trustees.

Programming

WICR is primarily run by University of Indianapolis students, who provide jazz and arts programming. The Fine Arts Society of Indianapolis

, a separate non-profit, is under contract to provide classical music programming. The station also features a variety of locally produced music, arts, and community programs, as well as nationally syndicated programs. WICR broadcasts all University of Indianapolis football and basketball games either on 88.7 fm or on wicronline.org

Events

WICR is involved in a number of events throughout the year. During the fall and spring WICR conducts a listener fund drive to raise money for events. In the spring WICR also hosts a jazz festival on the campus of the University of Indianapolis
