The comune
(or municipality) extends over an area of 18.02 km² and in June 2006 had a population of 6,883. Administratively it falls within the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola
.
In the past this was an important centre for the iron and steel, and chemical industries. Today the local economy is focussed on the tertiary sector and many of the industrial buildings have been converted to other uses: the town’s theatre, La Fabbrica, is based in a former factory.
