The bridge, which cost $20 million, was completed in 1991, as part of a project to complete Interstate 90 east of Coeur d’Alene
. The bridge was initially named the Bennett Bay Centennial Bridge, to commemorate the centennial of Idaho. In 1992, the bridge was renamed the Veterans Memorial Centennial Bridge, in honour of Idaho's war veterans.
The bridge is a segmental concrete box girder bridge; it is 527 m (1730 ft) long, by 21.3 m (70 ft) wide, and carries four traffic lanes 91 m (300 ft) above the valley floor.
