Founded in 1919 by a donation of £20,000 from Harold Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere, in memory of his son Vere who was killed at the Battle of Ancre, it was initially entitled simply the 'Professorship of Naval History', with the title changing to its present form in 1933. Among the holders of this prestigious chair, only Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond and Eric Walker have specialized in naval history, while the others have tended to be scholars of imperial history.
