Ventricular outflow tract
Encyclopedia
A ventricular outflow tract is a portion of either the left ventricle
or right ventricle
of the heart
through which blood
passes in order to enter the great arteries
.
The right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) is an infundibular
extension of the ventricular cavity which connects to the pulmonary artery
. The left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT), which connects to the aorta
, is nearly indistinguishable from the rest of the ventricle. The outflow tract is derived from the secondary heart field, during cardiogenesis.
Left ventricle
The left ventricle is one of four chambers in the human heart. It receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium via the mitral valve, and pumps it into the aorta via the aortic valve.-Shape:...
or right ventricle
Right ventricle
The right ventricle is one of four chambers in the human heart. It receives deoxygenated blood from the right atrium via the tricuspid valve, and pumps it into the pulmonary artery via the pulmonary valve and pulmonary trunk....
of the heart
Heart
The heart is a myogenic muscular organ found in all animals with a circulatory system , that is responsible for pumping blood throughout the blood vessels by repeated, rhythmic contractions...
through which blood
Blood
Blood is a specialized bodily fluid in animals that delivers necessary substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the cells and transports metabolic waste products away from those same cells....
passes in order to enter the great arteries
Great arteries
Great arteries is a term used to refer collectively to the primary arteries of the heart, which include:* Pulmonary artery: the vessel that carries oxygen-depleted blood from the right ventricle to the lungs....
.
The right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) is an infundibular
Infundibulum
An infundibulum is a funnel-shaped cavity or organ.* Lungs: The alveolar sacs of the lungs from which the air chambers open are called infundibula...
extension of the ventricular cavity which connects to the pulmonary artery
Pulmonary artery
The pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. They are the only arteries that carry deoxygenated blood....
. The left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT), which connects to the aorta
Aorta
The aorta is the largest artery in the body, originating from the left ventricle of the heart and extending down to the abdomen, where it branches off into two smaller arteries...
, is nearly indistinguishable from the rest of the ventricle. The outflow tract is derived from the secondary heart field, during cardiogenesis.
