Vefsn was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt
). In 1862, the area of Hattfjelldal
was separated from Vefsn to be a municipality of its own. The town of Mosjøen
was separated in 1876 to become a separate municipality. In 1927, the new municipalities of Drevja
and Grane were separated from Vefsn. On 1 January 1962, the town of Mosjøen and the municipalities of Drevja and Elsfjord
were merged with Vefsn. On 1 January 1995, the mainland areas of Alstahaug
were transferred to Vefsn.
