 at a cable head end or satellite server bay and the consumer calls up the particular program they want to watch from a menu at any given time as opposed to a linear network whose programs are on various time slots during the day. They are the next generation of television networks. The cable and satellite industries are making a big push to market this service, so much so that most remote controls have a VOD button on the remote. Usually VODnet's are genre portal based. This means that you would find Sportsskool and The Ski Channel

Currently, all major Cable, Satellite and Telco distributors carry VODnet's. Most mid-size Cable Operators carry VODnet's. There are many smaller Cable Operators who have not built out their systems to digital yet who do not have VOD at all.

The majority of VODnet's launched in 2007 and 2008.

It is anticipated that there will be numerous VODnet's launching in 2010 as the ability to launch new linear services is less likely. VODnet's are less expensive to the network and the distributor and use less bandwidth resources that the distributors are trying to save for new services like VOIP, Hi Def, internet

In March of '08, Exercise TV reached its 100 Millionth view. In January of '09, Mag Rack, led by the founder of the original Mag Rack re-purchase Lifeskool and Sportsskool from Rainbow Media a subsidiary of Cablevision. Shortly thereafter Mag Rack additionally purchased Concert TV

went bankrupt. They had supposedly raised over $50 million dollars, but spent lavishly and were the victim of poor timing.

Fearnet was recently dropped by Time Warner Cable. Fearnet gave them a trial run free period, but Time Warner opted not to pay for the channel. Fearnet in turn ran a consumer campaign to get Time Warner consumers to demand the return of the channel. Although the campaign was very aggressive, it failed.
