Encyclopedia
VG-1 is a high Carbon
Carbon
Carbon is the chemical element with symbol C and atomic number 6. As a member of group 14 on the periodic table, it is nonmetallic and tetravalent—making four electrons available to form covalent chemical bonds...

 (C) Molybdenum
Molybdenum
Molybdenum , is a Group 6 chemical element with the symbol Mo and atomic number 42. The name is from Neo-Latin Molybdaenum, from Ancient Greek , meaning lead, itself proposed as a loanword from Anatolian Luvian and Lydian languages, since its ores were confused with lead ores...

 (Mo) stainless steel
Stainless steel
In metallurgy, stainless steel, also known as inox steel or inox from French "inoxydable", is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5 or 11% chromium content by mass....

.

VG-1 has a Carbon (C) content between 0.95-1.05, Chromium (Cr) content between 13.0-15.0, Molybdenum (Mo) content between 0.2-0.4 and contains less than 0.25 of Nickel (Ni). During forging, Mo and Cr forms hard double carbide bonds which help improve the abrasion and corrosion resistance of the steel. It is usually heat treated to reach hardness of 58-61

Knife retailer Cold Steel markets a variety of knives that use VG-1. Cold Steel claims that VG-1 has better sharpness, edge retention, point strength, shock, and strength characteristics than 440C, VG-10

, and ATS 34 stainless steels. On the other hand, there have been reports that VG-1 might be more chip prone than other comparable stainless steels, but these reports have been disputed.

VG-1 is also used in hairdresser's scissors, kitchen knives, and blades for food-processing machines.
