History
Universiti Brunei Darussalam was established in 1985, only a year after the country regained full independence, with an intake of 176 students. In 1988, the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education was merged into the university.Mission
The original mission of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, as a small national university, was to develop human resources through excellence in teaching, research and services in areas of importance to Brunei Darussalam.- Teaching is the University's primary mission. Universiti Brunei Darussalam aims to produce quality graduates suitably equipped in terms of knowledge, skills, attitudes, moral and spiritual values, to support the development needs of the nation and consistent with the national philosophy.
- Research is the University's second mission. As the nation's only university, Universiti Brunei Darussalam will promote and undertake research, particularly applied research, in areas where it has a comparative advantage and in accordance with national needs.
- The University's third mission is service to the community. As the University's staff are highly skilled in a large and growing number of specialisation, Universiti Brunei Darussalam will make this expertise available to the community.

Our mission is to develop the individual and society as a whole, guided by our commitment to the nation that we love and by extension, the world that we cherish. We will achieve this by pushing back the frontiers of human knowledge through the cultivation and enrichment of the intellect, faith and culture which will in turn be accomplished through the creation of a conducive environment for achieving excellence in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, public service and professional practices.
