The United States Ambassador to Bangladesh is the official representative of the President of the United States to the head of state of Bangladesh

Until 1971 Bangladesh had been a part of Pakistan
, named East Pakistan
. In March 1971 East Pakistan seceded and declared itself independent. After a nine-month war
with West Pakistan, East Pakistani forces were victorious on December 16, 1971. East Pakistan gained its independence the following day and became Bangla Desh (Country of Bengal
). In January 1972 the nation changed its name to Bangladesh.
The United States established diplomatic relations with Bangladesh five months later. The embassy in Dhaka
was established on May 18, 1972, with Herbert D. Spivack as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim. Daniel O. Newberry served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, October 1972–April 1974. The first ranking ambassador arrived in April 1974. Relations have been continuous since that time.
