 in 1896, the son of a pharmacist

. He joined the German army in 1914, and joined the NDASP (Nazi Party) in 1933. He joined the SS in 1933 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He rose quickly through the ranks, reaching the rank of Major General

 by 1941, and then being appointed as "Chief of SS German Nationhood Staff", a position he held from November 1941 through his arrest by the Allied Forces in May 1945.

Greifelt was tried at Nuremburg for war crimes by US Military Tribunal between 20 October 1947 and 10 March 1948. He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
