Prior to 1990, the Ukrainian daily Molod Ukrainy ("Ukraine's Youth") conducted polls to determine the footballer of the year, and subsequently Ukrainskiy Football took over (which is published by the same publisher as Molod Ukrainy). There is also another award of the best footballer in the Ukrainian Premier League that was established by the other newspaper Komanda

. That award is not restricted to the Ukrainian nationals as in case of Ukrainian Football, but rather to the premier league players.

Ukrainian Football

The very first poll, however, was conducted in 1968 by another former Kievan newspaper "Komsomolskoe znamya" which announced both Vasyl Turyanchyk and Volodymyr Muntyan the best players of Ukraine (Ukrainian SSR). It is unknown whether the newspaper continued to conduct such polls following years, but it is certain that this tradition was picked up by "Molod Ukrainy" that conducted the voting since 1969 on regular basis. !
