 began to flourish as Turkish workers went to the kingdom in considerable numbers and Turkish businessmen won sizeable contracts there. In 1977, there was 6,500 Turks in Saudi Arabia, 5,000 of which were officially reported workers.

Turkish labour migration has traditionally been to European countries within the context of bilateral agreements. However, in the 1970s, when Europe began to lose its appeal, another workers’ migration began to the Arab countries. Migration to Arab countries first started with a labour-force agreement with Turkey
