Trzin is a settlement and registered seat of eponymous municipality in Republic Slovenia with 3664 residents (1815 men and 1849 women). Its elevation above see level is 299 m. Municipality of Trzin borders on municipalities Mengeš, Domžale and Ljubljana. The municipality can be divided in 3 parts: old part, new part – Mlake, and trade-industrial zone Trzin. Till the year 1998 municipality Trzin was part of municipality Domžale, nowadays it is an independent municipality.
The old part is located between Onger hill in the west and Trzinsko Field in the east. In this part elementary school Trzin, town hall, the church of saint Florian, library, fire station and some farms can be found.
The new part or Mlake respectively is located on the west side of Onger hill and is mainly housing estate, grown on former swamp. Here can be found banks, kindergarten, leisure centre and some pubs.
Trade-industrial zone Trzin is the newest part of Trzin, build in 1985. Besides residential houses, well known companies, which provide workplaces for residents, are located there.

History

The oldest preserved document, in which the name of the town is mentioned, was written on the 15. Mai of 1273. It is a document of the German knighthood, whit which the Carniolan state governor confirmed, that Vilijem Svibenjki gave up his rights on 6 farms in Trzin on the behalf of German knighthood; the town itself is mentioned under the name of Direzin. After this, the town was mentioned many times with different names: Terzzein, Terzeyn, Trezein or Tersein.
Many archeological diggings from the Roman ages testify of Roman settlements, because the roman Emona-Celeia rode lead through Trzin. In a crevice of a quarry was found a stone hatchet from the Neolithic period, which proves the attendance or maybe even permanent settlement of people in this area.

Janez Vajkard Valvazor wrote, that people of Trzin were renowned for making excellent beds, fishing nets, fishing rods and ropes, though people of Trzin where mostly (stock) farmers. Because fields couldn’t satisfy the needs of food, many set to other work, like butcher or slaughterer. They were valued sausage salesman – they are supposed to be the “inventors” of the famous Carniola sausage (Kranjska klobasa). Some of them where livestock traders or horse and cart drivers, well known even in Klagenfurt.
Trzin people where also known as very brave. In 1528 they defeated, together with inhabitants of Mengeš and Goričice, plundering Turk on Mengeš Field. On the eight of September 1813 they helped Austrian to defeat Napoleons soldiers on Mengeš Field, with attacking the 7000 Frenchman, lead from general Belotti, from the back.

In the time of French occupation, brigands occurred in the area of Trzin. Some of them stayed even after the French pulled back. Many stories on brigands remained - the most attention-grabbing is the story about the death of the most famous brigand Dimež (Franc Sicherl), who choke to death on smoke in the brickyard of Trzin, together with his accomplice Pepelnak (Matijc Mlakar), on 20.1.1862.

In 1851 patriot Ivan Hribar (politician, banker, publicist and diplomat) was born in Trzin.

Many boys from Trzin fought bravely in World War I and the north border under general Maister. On the front of this war 11 man of Trzin fall, 4 where missing. During the World War I there was an airport with a base for 32 airplanes. During World War II, 24 villagers slain, 3 died hostage, 1 was burnt alive, 5 died in internment and 79 were evicted from their home town.

Trzin played an important role in the Slovenian Independence War in 1991, since army of the Territorial Defence of the Republic of Slovenia and the Yugoslav National Army fought on the Pšata river bridge on 27.6.1991. This battle is considered one of the major battles in which four soldiers of Yugoslav National Army were killed and one member of the Territorial Defence of the Republic of Slovenia.

Institutions

Trzin Primary School was founded in 1985, initially named Elementary School Edvard Kardelj, but changed its name after the independence of Slovenia. Till the establishment of the elementary school children of Trzin went to school in Mengeš or Domžale. Today the school has eighteen sections (first to ninth grade) of primary school, for more than 350 pupils. In the years from 2003 to 2005 the school was extended. The school offers a wide range of activities in culture, science, social science, technical field and sports. As part of the Public institution Elementary school Trzin, also two Sections of kindergarten called Thumbelina (slov. Palčica) and Frogs (slov. Žabice) are taking care for the children.

From the year 1894 Trzin had his own municipality and gendarmerie, where municipality matters were run by a judge with two assistants. On the formation of municipalities in the second half of the 19th century, also Trzin got its local office, which operated independently until the German occupation. Germans joint Trzin to the municipality Mengeš. At the first election where councilors of local people's committees elected, which operated independently until 1952, then the town was re-joined to Mengeš or respectively to the local community. In 1970 Trzin again became an independent local community, which operated within the municipality of Domžale. Trzin became an independent municipality in 1998. Mayor of municipality Trzin is Mr. Tone Peršak.

Mountaineering society formed in Trzin in 1983, which is named Onger - after a hill (378 m), which cuts between the "old" and "new" part of Trzin.

The Church of St. Florian was built in the 14th century and underwent several renovations (including renovation after the earthquake in 1895). A number of works by renowned artists such as F. Jelovsek, L. Layer, M. Koželj and Jože Plečnik can be found in it. It was mentioned for the first time in 1526 in documents as a succursal of Mengeš parish. The church of St. Florian is an independent parish since 1974.

Mayor

Mr. Peršak graduated comparative literature and literary theory at the Faculty of arts and theatre and radio directing at the Academy for theatre, radio, film and television in Slovenia. Starting his career as theater director of Chamber theatre 55 in Sarajevo and assistant professor at the Theatre Academy in Ljubljana, he made a big contribution to Slovene culture and art with 12 book publications various genres, 2 theatre stagings, 2 TV plays and over 10 radio plays. He started his career in politics with joining the Slovene independence movement in the 80'. Fighting for democracy and Slovene independence he was one of the co-writers of the famous “writers constitution” in 1988. He has been parliament member from 1990–1996 and is state councilor since 2002. He’s been also elected for the second time as vice-president of the Association of municipalities and towns of Slovenia and is vice-president of NALAS.
