Transduction
Encyclopedia
Transduction is a mechanism whereby genetic material may be transferred from the genes of a bacterium to another bacterium. This may include the actual covalent-bonding of new genetic markers. Other meanings of transduction apply to physics, physiology, machine learning and psychology.

More specifically, Transduction may refer to:
  • Transduction (biophysics)
    Transduction (biophysics)
In biophysics, transduction is the conveyance of energy from one electron to another , at the same time that the class of energy changes.Photonic energy, the kinetic energy of a photon, may follow the following paths:...

, the conveyance of energy from a donor electron to a receptor electron, during which the class of energy changes
  • Transduction (genetics)
    Transduction (genetics)
Transduction is the process by which DNA is transferred from one bacterium to another by a virus. It also refers to the process whereby foreign DNA is introduced into another cell via a viral vector. Transduction does not require cell-to-cell contact , and it is DNAase resistant...

, the transfer of viral, bacterial, or both bacterial and viral DNA from one cell to another using a bacteriophage vector. The transfer can take place at any DNA marker. Specialized transduction works similarly to transduction, but is limited to specific locations in the DNA sequence.
  • Transduction (machine learning)
    Transduction (machine learning)
In logic, statistical inference, and supervised learning, transduction or transductive inference is reasoning fromobserved, specific cases to specific cases. In contrast, induction is reasoning from observed training cases...

, the process of directly drawing conclusions about new data from previous data, without constructing a model
  • Transduction (physiology)
    Transduction (physiology)
In physiology, transduction is the conversion of a stimulus from one form to another.Transduction in the nervous system typically refers to stimulus alerting events wherein a mechanical/physical/etc stimulus is converted into an action potential which is transmitted along axons towards the central...

, the transportation of stimuli to the nervous system
  • Transduction (psychology)
    Transduction (psychology)
Transduction is the transformation of one form of energy to another. In psychology, transduction refers to the nervous system. In the system transduction occurs when environmental energy is transformed into electrical or neural energy...

, reasoning from specific cases to general cases, typically employed by children during their development
  • Signal transduction
    Signal transduction
Signal transduction occurs when an extracellular signaling molecule activates a cell surface receptor. In turn, this receptor alters intracellular molecules creating a response...

, any process by which a biological cell converts one kind of signal or stimulus into another
  • A process by which a transducer
    Transducer
A transducer is a device that converts one type of energy to another. Energy types include electrical, mechanical, electromagnetic , chemical, acoustic or thermal energy. While the term transducer commonly implies the use of a sensor/detector, any device which converts energy can be considered a...
