Competition format
Since 2002, the competition is divided in two zones, Zona Norte (North Zone) and Zona Sur (South Zone). This was intended to end the hegemony of the Brazilian teams in the tournament. Each zone is divided in two groups with a variable number of teams. The teams of each group play against each other within their groups once. Depending of the zone, the two best-placed teams of each group play the semifinals, and the winners play the zone final, or just the winners of each group play the zone final. The winner of one zone plays the final of the competition against the winner of the other zone. Results
